Green Approaches and Technologies

ENERGY is fast becoming a determining factor in shaping our living environment. Green approaches and technologies based on responsible use of non-renewable and renewable energy and promote reduction in consumption levels can lead to sustainable ways of living.

TOWARDS THIS, Hunnarshala uses a design vocabulary based on traditional features like courtyards, verandahs, and other features for passive solar cooling to respond to climatic needs.

THE MATERIALS USED are local and involve synergetic combinations with least possible energy expended in manufacturing to ensure small ecological footprints. With this perspective, the materials and technologies promoted and used by Hunnarshala involve lime, earth, thatch, country tiles along with roof water harvesting, and decentralised waste water recycling.

THE EARTH TECHNOLOGIES with which Hunnashala has worked include stabilised and non-stabilised mud blocks, rammed earth, wattle & daub and adobe. Hunnarshala is making efforts to use these green approaches and technologies at large scale such as mass housing and city level.

HUNNARSHALA integrates modern scientific knowledge with traditional wisdom to develop and mainstream these technological solutions. Hunnarshala collaborates with its sister organisations to get inputs particularly on water, renewable energy, bio-diversity, etc.
